AUGUSTA, GA – With the final conference matches of the regular season in the books, the Peach Belt Conference has released the 2014 Volleyball Tournament bracket from the league office in Augusta, Ga. The event will be played under a new format this season with quarterfinal matches being played on Tuesday, Nov. 11, and hosted by the higher seed. The highest remaining seed following quarterfinal play will host the final four next Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14-15.
Armstrong State University will be the #1 seed once again for the PBC Tournament. The Pirates captured their fourth straight PBC regular-season championship earlier this season and enter the tournament as the two-time defending champions with a 17-1 league mark. The Pirates will host #8-seed Francis Marion in Tuesday's quarterfinal. The Patriots finished the season with a 5-13 league mark following a loss at Columbus State in the regular-season finale on Saturday.
USC Aiken is the second seed for the PBC Tournament. The Pacers finished the regular season tied with Georgia Regents University at 13-5 in conference play. The two teams split their regular-season meetings and each won with identical 3-1 set scores. USCA gets the tiebreak thanks to their win over top-seeded Armstrong last Thursday. Armstrong swept GRU during the year. USCA will host #7-seed Flagler on Tuesday night. This will be a rematch of last Friday's contest in the Convocation Center that Flagler won 3-1.
Georgia Regents set a new school record for wins in a season and are the #3 seed for the PBC Tournament. Now 25-7 overall on the season and 13-5 in league play, the Jaguars surpassed their old school mark of 23 wins set in the 1995 season. The 2014 squad has also set a record for best winning percentage in school history. GRU will host #6 Lander on Tuesday night at Christenberry Fieldhouse. Lander finished 9-9 in league play after beating Flagler on Saturday in the regular-season finale, but lost a tiebreaker to Columbus State (details below).
Montevallo is the #4 seed. The Falcons finished the regular season strong with wins in three of their final four matches, including a 3-2 marathon over UNC Pembroke on Saturday. UM has reached the PBC semifinals in two of the last four years, including 2013. The Falcons will host #5-seed Columbus State on Tuesday. The Cougars overcame a slow start to their season with wins in the last three matches to move to 9-9 in league play. CSU finished in a tie with Lander in the standings and the two teams split their head-to-head matches. However, CSU won five combined sets in their two meetings – a 3-1 win with a 3-2 loss – compared to only four sets won by Lander, giving the Cougars the #5.
The PBC semifinals will be played on Friday, Nov. 14 at 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm with the championship match on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2:00 pm. All of Tuesday's quarterfinal matches will begin at 7:00 pm local time.
