GAINESVILLE, GA – UNC Pembroke's Joshua Chepkesir won the NCAA Southeast Regional on Saturday morning in Gainesville, Ga, while the Augusta University Jaguars finished third as a team, both earning spots in the NCAA National Championship next month. The 10k regional was hosted by the University of North Georgia.
Chepkesir, who also won the PBC Championship two weeks ago, covered the course in 31:10.0, winning a sprint to the line over Carson-Newman's Luke Greer by three-tenths of a second. UNCP's Silus Kipkoech finished in sixth place with a time of 31:57.3 and will await work on a possible at-large bid to the nationals by the NCAA on Monday. The top three teams and top two individuals not on an advancing team are guaranteed spots in the nationals. The NCAA will give 10 more teams and select individuals at-large spots.
Augusta finished in third place behind Queens and Mt. Olive and avenged a loss in the PBC Championship by edging UNC Pembroke by four points. AU's Hunter Kimball finished seventh in a time of 32:02.0 while Noah Hulett was one spot behind in 32:05.0. Jacob Poston finished 19thin a time of 32:46.1 with Chandler Kennedy in 23rdwith 33:04.2.
Flagler finished in seventh place and were led by Crisman Jones in a time of 33:36.9. Georgia College was eighth as Collin Silliman finished 13thin 32:30.9 and Columbus State was ninth with Wright Calhoun leading with a time of 32:38.5.
The Division II National Championship will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Shenley Park in Pittsburgh, Pa. The event is part of the NCAA Division II Fall Festival.
