COLUMBUS - The second-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team defeated 7th-ranked Lander 5-2 to clinch the regular season Peach Belt Conference title on Friday. The match took place at the Walden Tennis Center.
Columbus State (19-2, 8-0 PBC) won their third consecutive Peach Belt Conference regular season title and are currently undefeated in conference play with one match remaining. A win in their final match would give them back-to-back undefeated seasons inside the conference.
The Cougars started strong rolling through all three doubles matches.
Top-ranked doubles team Alvaro Regalado and Zach Whaanga played in a showdown against the third-ranked doubles team in the nation. Regalado and Whaanga grabbed the 6-4 win in the top spot while KP Pannu and Tommaso Schold also picked up a 6-4 win over at second. Arnold Kokulewski and Matei Avram rounded out the doubles sweep winning 6-2 to give CSU the doubles point.
In singles play the Bearcats sent three ranked players in the top three spots but each one was taken down in straight sets by Columbus State.
Top-ranked Pannu won 6-1, 6-3 while Fabien Asdrubal snatched a 6-2, 6-4 point for the Cougars over at second. At third singles it was 36th-ranked Regalado who quickly triumphed over 59th-ranked Ozan Cildir 6-2, 6-2.
With the match in hand, the final three courts played out to a finish at fourth through sixth singles.
65th-ranked Avram worked hard coming up with the three set 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 comeback win at fifth singles to give CSU their fifth point.
But over at fourth and sixth the Cougars dropped two close three set matches.
Kokulewski fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-10 in fourth while Schold came up just short at sixth losing 5-7, 6-0, 6-7.
Columbus State has one final regular season match, scheduled for Saturday, April 13. The match is set to start at 11:00 a.m. at the Walden Tennis Center.
