AUGUSTA, GA – The Peach Belt Conference and commissioner David Brunk are pleased to announce that the University of Montevallo will join the league as an associate member for Esports. UM will begin full participation in the fall of 2019.
"I'm pleased to welcome Montevallo as our first associate member in Esports," said commissioner Brunk. "I'd like to thank president Dr. John Stewart and athletic director Mark Richard for their vision in growing their Esports program. Expansion of the Peach Belt with associate members has been something we have been planning on from the start and the University of Montevallo will make a great addition."
Montevallo was a full member of the Peach Belt from 2009 to 2017. Located in Montevallo, Ala., the school will field their first Esports team in the fall of 2019 to play League of Legends from Riot Games.
"Montevallo is incredibly excited to field an ESports team and be part of the Peach Belt Conference as they enter their second season with League of Legends," said Dr. Benton Tyler, professor of mathematics at UM and advisor for the Esports team. "We look forward to the competition and are enthusiastic about the opportunity this will give our students."
The Peach Belt is preparing to enter their second regular season of League of Legends starting in January of 2019. The eight-week season will culminate in the second in-person championship, which will be held March 29-30 at Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.
The PBC is the first NCAA conference in any division to offer Esports as a conference championship event and were the first to hold an in-person tournament in March of 2018. The PBC is a part of Riot's College League of Legends Season with the league's champion and runner-up advancing to the national championship play-in round.
