Peach Belt Announces Baseball All-Conference Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Peach Belt Conference announced the 2007 baseball All-Conference team at a banquet in Spartanburg, S.C., site of the 2007 PBC Tournament. Georgia College & State University’s Justin Mills was named the PBC Player of the Year while Francis Marion’s Dylan Owen was the Pitcher of the Year. North Georgia’s Craig Brisson was the Freshman of the Year while his head coach, Tom Cantrell, was named the Coach of the Year.

Mills hit .333 for the Bobcats in 2007 and helped lead the team to their second straight PBC Championship. The senior from Ivey, Ga., led the PBC in runs scored with 78 and in stolen bases with 35, tied for the eighth most in a single season in PBC history. He also hit for power with 17 doubles, six triples and six home runs, leading GCSU with 117 total bases. He also drew a PBC-best 54 walks. He becomes the third Bobcat to claim Player of the Year honors; the first since Mike DeVeaux in 2005.

Dylan Owen claims his second straight Pitcher of the Year award after leading the Peach Belt Conference in strikeouts (107) and opponents batting average (.207) and was ranked second in ERA with a 1.05 and innings pitched with 94.2. The junior from Chesterfield, S.C. was 9-1 in 16 appearances this season with three complete games and did not allow a home run. He allowed only 11 earned runs in his 94 innings and issued only 16 walks. He is only the second PBC pitcher ever to win the title back-to-back, joining Kennesaw State’s Grant Reynolds who won in 2002 and 2003.

Craig Brisson led North Georgia and was ranked 11th in the PBC with a .359 batting average in 2007. The true freshman from Lawrenceville, Ga., played in 55 of the Saints’ 56 games with 80 hits and 28 RBIs. He also led NGCSU with 13 stolen bases and a .443 on-base percentage. He is the first North Georgia baseball player to receive one of the Peach Belt Conference’s three major player awards.

Tom Cantrell guided his Saints to a surprising fourth-place finish in the PBC. Now in his ninth season at North Georgia, Cantrell has taken the unenviable task of bringing his team up from the NAIA into the most competitive Division II baseball conference in the nation and has met with success. The Saints finished 35-16 overall, 17-13 in PBC play. Although ineligible for the PBC Tournament, the Saints won seven of the 10 PBC series they played in this year, including taking two of three from PBC Champions GCSU. Cantrell also won his 500th career game during the season and earns his first PBC Coach of the Year award.

The 22-member All-Conference team members were selected by the league’s 11 head coaches.
