AUGUSTA, GA – Following one of the most exciting and contest regular-season finales ever, the Peach Belt Conference has released the bracket for the 2017 men’s basketball tournament. The tournament begins on Saturday, Feb. 25, with four quarterfinal games, hosted by the higher seed. The winners of those four games will advance to the PBC semifinals and finals hosted by the highest remaining women’s east seed. The semis and finals will be held on March 4-5.
Both the east and west divisions had no clear-cut favorites heading into the final day with every seed up for grabs. Here, we will take you through the final tiebreak process as we reveal the seeds.
Augusta University is the top seed in the east. The Jaguars defeated rival USC Aiken 87-81 in overtime on Wednesday night, finishing in a tie atop the division with UNC Pembroke.
In a two-way tie, the PBC tiebreaker first looks at head-to-head results. Augusta and UNC Pembroke split their two meetings. The next tier in the tiebreak is in-division record, where Augusta takes the edge with a 9-3 mark against the east. UNC Pembroke has an 8-4 in-division mark and will be the #2 seed in the tournament.
USC Aiken is the third seed following the overtime loss to Augusta. Lander will be the #4 seed in the east.
Not since women’s basketball in 2007 has there been a five-way tie in the PBC…until tonight. Clayton State defeated Montevallo, Young Harris blasted North Georgia and Columbus State held off Georgia Southwestern, leaving five teams with 11-8 records.
To break the tie, the PBC rules dictate that all five teams be placed in a mini-conference to examine the combined head-to-head results. When all five teams are placed in the conference, Clayton State comes out on top. The Lakers swept both Columbus State and North Georgia, split against Montevallo and were swept by Young Harris. That adds up to a 5-3 mark, best among the five teams.
The tiebreak policy states that once a team has earned the highest available seed, the remaining teams begin the process all over again. So, the four remaining teams were then examined against one another and Columbus State came out on top with the #2 seed. The Cougars swept North Georgia and split against Montevallo and Young Harris for a 4-2 overall mark, tops among tied teams.
With CSU gone at #2, the three teams left were once again compared against one another for the third seed and North Georgia comes through with a 3-1 mark against Young Harris and Montevallo.
With only YHC and UM remaining, the two teams employ the PBC two-way tiebreak. Montevallo swept both games from the Mountain Lions and earn the #4 seed in the tournament.
Game times will be released by the conference office on Thursday.
