Barnette, Darling to Join ASU Volleyball
Augusta State head coach Sharon Bonaventure announced the signing of Leslye Barnette and Margaret Darling to the team for the 2012-13 season.
Barnette won three state titles the last three seasons at Pope High School in Marietta, Ga., with a runner-up finish in 2008. She finished her high school career with a record of 149-5, and was named to the 2011 Senior All-Stars and to the Honorable Mention All-Area squad.
The middle/right side hitter also spent three seasons playing club volleyball at the A5 Volleyball Club in Roswell, Ga. This season, the 18Marc team has earned an American and a National bid to the Jr. Olympic National Volleyball tournament in Columbus, Ohio.
“Leslye has great timing as a blocker, and manages to get her hand around every ball when she plays the middle,” Bonaventure said. “She has a history of winning championships and knows what it takes to win.”
Darling comes to Augusta State as a transfer from Syracuse and will have three years of eligibility remaining. As a freshman last season, the Limestone, Ontario, native blasted two kills in her collegiate debut against Lehigh University, and went 40-1 in three seasons at Georgetown District High in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada. She was named team MVP her senior season in high school.
“Margaret is an explosive hitter who will add depth to our front line of attackers,” Bonaventure said. “As a pre-med major, she is a great athletic and academic addition to our program.”
The Jaguars return a wealth of experience from last season's squad that advanced to the Peach Belt Conference tournament semifinals, including Freshman of the Year Alex Rohlfing and the top three offensive and defensive threats
