Four PBC Teams Receive AVCA Team Academic Award

Four PBC volleyball teams were among the 57 Divisoni II programs recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) with a Team Academic Award.  Armstrong Atlantic State, Francis Marion, Montevallo and USC Aiken were all named to the list, which reached a record of 481 teams from all three NCAA Divisions, the NAIA, two-year colleges, NCAA men’s volleyball and high school teams.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Armstrong earns the honor for a second straight season. Three Pirates earned PBC All-Academic Team honors during the 2010-11 year and eleven of the 15 players on the squad were named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll.

USC Aiken as a team in the 2010-11 athletic year finished with a 3.495 team GPA. The Pacers had 10 of their 16 student-athletes with a GPA of 3.5 or higher this past year.

Over 1,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's 19-year history, with exactly 4,297 awards been given out in total. Only two institutions, both high schools, have earned the distinction all 19 years: Jonesboro High School (Jonesboro, Arkansas) and Ross S. Sterling High School (Baytown, Texas).
