Apr 30, 2008 Six PBC Women's Tennis Teams to Play in NCAA Tournament INDIANAPOLIS, IND -- Six Peach Belt Conference wommen’s
tennis teams learned late Wednesday that they will be among the 62
competing for the 2008 National Championship as the NCAA released
the tournament field. Armstrong Atlantic State and Francis Marion
will be two of the 16 regional hosts for the first and second
rounds of the tournament. Clayton State and Augusta State will both
play at Armstrong Atlantic State while Columbus State and GCSU will
be at Francis Marion.
Armstrong Atlantic State enters the NCAA Tournament as the
#2-ranked team in the nation with a 26-1 record. The Lady Pirates
will be looking for their first national championship since 2005 by
taking on CIAA automatic bid winner Virginia State in their first
match in Savannah. Clayton State and Augusta State will play in the
other match.
Francis Marion will host an NCAA women’s tennis regional for
the first time in school history after finishing the regular season
20-2. The Patriots will open play on their home courts against
Erskine, who won the automatic bid of Conference Carolinas. GCSU
and Columbus State will meet in the other match.
The first and second rounds will take place on campus either May
8-9 or 9-10. The winners at each of the 16 regionals will come
together in Houston, Texas, for the national finals May 14-17 at
Memorial Park. Game times and specific dates for first-round
matches will be announced in the coming days.
