PBC Women's Soccer Teams Dominate National Statistics

With nearly a month gone in the 2010 season, PBC women’s soccer teams are playing some of the best soccer in the nation, as evidenced in the latest NCAA statistical rankings.  PBC women’s soccer teams are at or near the top of each category, with individual players also earning high national rankings.  The NCAA statistics report is issued each Tuesday during the season, covering games through the preceding Sunday.  This week’s report was issued on Sept. 28, covering all games played through the 26th.

The Peach Belt is home to three of the top 10 scoring offenses and two of the top 15 scoring defenses in the nation.  As may be expected, second-ranked Columbus State is included in both categories with a scoring offense that is tied with Armstrong Atlantic State for #3 in the nation with 3.71 goals per game.  North Georgia is seventh with 3.43 per game.

Defensively, three PBC schools are allowing fewer than one goal per game.  Columbus State has allowed only one goal to be scored against them all year and are fourth in the nation with a 0.143 goals-against average.  UNC Pembroke is riding a 434-minute scores streak and are 15th with a 0.674.  CSU is also fifth in shutout percentage, holding their opponents without a goal in 85.7% of their games.  UNCP is 15th in that catergory at 62.5%  Columbus State is also ranked third in save percentage at .941 while UNC Pembroke is seventh at .923.

Columbus State is one of six teams left in the country without a loss or tie on the year.

The Peach Belt Conference also has more than a fair share of leaders in individual categories.  North Georgia’s Casey Smith is ranked #1 in the country in total assists and assists per game.  Columbus State goalkeeper Mary Mancin is also ranked #1 in goals-against average, having not allowed a score this year.

On the offensive side, Clayton State’s Cherie Sayon, the most recent PBC Player of the Week, is ranked seventh nationally in points per game and fifth in goals per game.  Sayon, Columbus State’s Stephanie Lowery and UNC Pembroke’s Anna Svensson are all tied for seventh with eight total goals scored. Lowery is also ranked sixth in goals per game while Svensson and NGCSU’s Samantha Abrahart are tied for 13th.  Columbus State’s Stephanie Parrish is tied for fifth in assists per game while teammate Leslie Matthews is 16th.

Defensively, the PBC has four goalkeepers ranked in the top 32 in the nation in GAA.  With teammate Mancin ranked #1, CSU’s Willi Babillis is ranked 9th in the same category with a 0.286 GAA.  UNC Pembroke’s Britney Bennett, a two-time PBC Goalkeeper of the Week, is ranked 18th while Armstrong Atlantic State’s Tracey Mitchell is 32nd.

The NCAA statistics report is issued each Tuesday afternoon.  You can see the latest report with all the stats here.
