Nov 6, 2009 PBC Tournament - Montevallo's Dream Run Continues with 2-1 Win over GCSU EVANS, Ga. - The University of Montevallo women's soccer team
(8-8-3) continued its unbelievable postseason run as the Falcons
toppled fourth-seeded Georgia College and State University 2-1 to
make it to their third-straight Conference Championship game. The
Falcons began the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as the eighth
and lowest seed in the tournament but with a 1-0 win over the No. 1
seed Columbus State on Tuesday and a 2-1 win over No. 4 seed GCSU
this evening the Falcons have made it to the PBC Conference
Championship Match against No. 2 seed Armstrong Atlantic State
University.
The Falcons will be competing in their third-straight Conference
Championship game. The Falcons won the Gulf South Conference
Tournament in 2007 and made it to the GSC Championship game in 2008
and now will be competing in the PBC Championship game on Sunday at
1 p.m.
The Falcons fell behind early against GCSU as the Bobcats scored
just five minutes into the contest as Jamie Nevin scored on an
unassisted goal at the 5:37 mark of the first half. The game
remained a 1-0 advantage for the Bobcats the rest of the first
half.
The Falcons took four shots including three on goal in the first
half compared to GCSU's five shots and four on goal.
The second half continued to roll in the Bobcats favor until the
79:38 mark as freshman Jenna Kuzemski scored the game-tying goal
with just 10:22 left in the match. The goal marked the second of
Kuzemski's young career and second in as many games. She scored the
game-winning goal against Columbus State in the PBC
quarterfinals.
Just under seven minutes later the Falcons were awarded a penalty
kick. Senior Erin Duncan stepped up to take what could be the
biggest kick of her career. She beat the GCSU goalkeeper and put
the Falcons ahead 2-1 with just 3:34 left in the match.
The Falcons held on the final three minutes and emerged victorious
over the fourth seeded Bobcats.
GCSU out-shot the Falcons 15-10 but the Falcons led in shots on
goal 8-6.
Freshman Alyssa Maxwell made five saves in the victory.
Duncan led the team with three shots with all three on net while
junior Alex Terhar and sophomore Denise Mannion each had two.
The Falcons now advance to the Peach Belt Conference Championship
on Sunday, Nov. 8 to face Armstrong Atlantic State University at
1:00 p.m. eastern time at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga. AASU
defeated third seed Lander University 2-1 with a goal with just one
second remaining in regulation.
