UNC Pembroke, Two PBC Individuals Selected for NCAA Women’s Golf Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, IND – UNC Pembroke and two other PBC individuals learned on Monday that they will compete in the 2012 NCAA South Regional tournament as the eight-team field was announced from the national office.  The Braves are the only PBC team to make the regional while Armstrong’s Jenna Birch and Columbus State’s Kimesha Anthony will also compete.

The tournament will be a 54-hole event that will take place on May 6-8 at the Stonebrook Golf Course in Pace, Florida.

UNC Pembroke, ranked #11 in the nation, will play as a team in the regional for a second straight season.  The Braves were winners of five tournaments during the regular season and were second at the 2012 PBC Championships.  UNCP led the Peach Belt with a 316.2 team stroke average.

For Columbus State, it is the second straight season that Anthony has been an at-large selection. Last season, the junior had a rough first round in the event but battled back to finish in 21st place.  This season, Anthony has once again been phenomenal as she was an All-Peach Belt Conference first team selection for the third time in her career. In 11 events, she finished inside the top-10 10 times including seven top-five finishes. Her stroke average of 77.8 is currently the third best mark in the PBC.

A first-team All-Peach Belt Conference performer for the Pirates this season, Birch sports the lowest stroke average among Peach Belt players with a 76.13 stroke average in 15 rounds of action. She captured the Newberry Invitational individual title in February and has five Top 10 finishes in seven events this season.

Armstrong women's golf is in its seventh season of competition since the program began in 2005-06. The Pirates captured their first Peach Belt Conference Championship this spring, but as a team were left out of the field by the selection committee.

The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a qualifying team from each regional will advance to the National Championship to be played on May 16-19 at the Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky.
