Lander Third at McAmis Memorial; Armstrong’s Birch Finishes Second at Marsh Landing

Lander continued to impress in their first season of competition as they finished third of 18 teams at the Agnes McAmis Memorial Invitational on Tuesday.  The Bearcats finished one place ahead of Columbus State in fourth and North Georgia who was ninth.  Elsewhere, Armstrong Atlantic State’s Jenna Birch turned in three solid rounds and finished second overall at the Marsh Landing Invitational.

Rachel Uremovich placed second overall with a 1-under-par 143 Tuesday to pace the Lander women’s golf team to a third place finish in the two-day, two-round 18-team Agnes McAmis Memorial hosted by Tusculum College at the par-72, 5,805-yard Link Hills Country Club.

Individually for Lander, Uremovich shot 143 (69-74), Ashley Shinn tied for 15th with 153 (78-75), Valentina Bueno tied for 18th with 154 (77-77), Dea Mahendra placed 28th at 156 (78-78), and Marianna Martins tied for 31st with 158 (78-80).

Lander has now finished no worse than third in their last five tournaments, including a win at the Dana Rader Intercollegiate in mid-March.

Columbus State shot a 15-over par 303 Tuesday to finish in fourth place.  The Lady Cougars shot a 607 for the tournament, which was the second lowest two-round total of the season.

Junior Kimesha Anthony capped off another great tournament shooting an even par 72. For the 36 holes, Anthony shot an even par 144 to finish in third place. It was her seventh top-five finish of the season.  Nikki Crowley grabbed a top-10 finish shooting a six-over par 78 over the final 18 holes. She finished in tied a tie for 10th place with a seven-over par 151. 

Heather Altiser improved by two-strokes from Monday to Tuesday as she fired a three-over par 75. Altiser just missed out on her first top-10 finish of the season coming in 13th place with an eight-over par 152. Junior Kristin Galek made a significant jump in the standings in round two as she fired a six-over par 78. After he 12-over par 84 on Monday, Galek jumped to 43rd place with a 36 hole score total of 18-over par 162.  Jennifer Brueshaber had CSU's drop score in round two shooting an 11-over par 83. For the tournament, she was 21-over par 165. 

The North Georgia women's golf team picked up a ninth place finish. The Saints were led by Catalina Olarte, who fired a team-best 148 (+4), which was also good enough for a fourth-place tie. Olarte was named to the 2012 Agnes McAmis Memorial All-Tournament Team for her strong performance, which included a total of five birdies.

Olarte shot well on the par-5's at Link Hills, finishing one-under combined on those holes. Olarte and Casey Truelove each finished with three-over-par's for the par-4 courses as well.

Truelove had the second best score on the team with a 154 (+10) which was good enough for a 18th-place tie, while Abbey Gill was third for North Georgia with a 168 (+24). Gill finished in a tie for 62nd place.

LeeAnn Noble shot a 178 (+34) and Jodie Borchert finished a shot back of that with a 179 (+35).

North Georgia finished the 2012 Agnes McAmis Memorial with a team score of 647 (+71), which landed them in ninth place in the 18-team field. The Saints improved 13 strokes in the final round, up 317 from 330 in their first round to move up in the final standings.

Jenna Birch Finishes Second At Marsh Landing Intercollegiate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Armstrong Atlantic State University sophomore Jenna Birch shot the day's best round with a two-under-par 70 to finish runner-up at the Marsh Landing Intercollegiate, hosted by Jacksonville University on Tuesday.

Playing as an individual, Birch finished the tournament with a three-round 219 total, two strokes behind individual champion Alex Buelow of Stetson, who carded a 77 on Tuesday to finish at 217. The finish is the fourth top 5 finish for Birch this spring and ensures that she will be eligible for NCAA postseason competition coming up in May.

Stetson captured the team tournament by 13 strokes over Cal Poly with an 894 team score.

Birch and the Pirates will move on to the PBC Championships on Monday and Tuesday, April 9-10, at Callaway Gardens in Columbus, Ga. Armstrong will be chasing its first PBC Championship after finishing third last year and second two years ago.
