Francis Marion Inks Alabama Point Guard
FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University women’s basketball head coach Kate Glusko has announced the signing of 5-3 point guard DeAsia Toney of Meridianville, Ala., during the recent early signing period.
Toney is a senior at Hazel Green High School, where she plays for head coach Chad Hill. A four-year starter, she has already surpassed 1,000 career assists.
She averaged 5.8 points, 7.1 assists, 4.2 steals, and 3.4 rebounds as a junior when Hazel Green went 22-8 and reached the sub-region round. She earned All-Area honors and was named to the Huntsville Times’ 2011 Elite Girls Basketball Team (honorable mention).
As a sophomore, she averaged 7.2 points, 6.3 assists, 3.6 steals, and 2.4 rebounds and garnered All-County recognition as the Lady Trojans placed third in the regionals with an 18-13 mark.
Toney also played for the Alabama Southern Starz program, and she recently helped their 2012-Combined squad to the AAU D2 national championship.
Toney also ran track at Hazel Green and placed in the top three in the sectionals for both the 100-meter dash and the long jump.
“DeAsia is one of those ‘tough-as-nails’ type players,” said Glusko. “She is quick, athletic, and a very good defender. She has a high basketball IQ and we are looking forward to having her for four years in our program.”
Francis Marion recently opened its 2011-12 season and the Patriots are currently 2-2 heading into Wednesday’s home contest with 15th-ranked Lander University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
