Seven PBC Volleyball Players Named All-Region

Seven PBC volleyball players have been named to the All-Region team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) or by Daktronics. Flagler had three honorees with Katie Beale, Justine Burkhardt and Meg Weathersby on the team while Armstrong Atlantic State also had three with Michele Remlinger, Kristin Standhardinger and Kathrin Standhardinger. Augusta State’s Jessica Howard was also named All-Region.

Kristin Standhardinger was named the AVCA Southeast Region Freshman of the Year for leading the Pirates to their second straight NCAA Championships berth. The Munich, Germany, native tallied 1,363 assists - averaging 10.25 assists per set, good for second in the Peach Belt Conference and 42nd in NCAA Division II. She also collected 135 kills and 305 digs on the year.
She is just the second AASU player to earn AVCA Region Freshman of the Year honors, joining Traci Knuth, who earned the honor in 2004.

Standhardinger was also one of three Pirates to earn All-Southeast Region honors by the AVCA, joining her twin sister Kathrin Standhardinger, as well as senior Michele Remlinger. The pair of middle hitters ranked 1-2 in the Peach Belt in hitting percentage as Kathrin Standhardinger hit .390 and Remlinger hit .357.

Kathrin currently ranks 12th in NCAA Division II in hitting percentage and led the Pirates this season in kills with 339. Remlinger, a native of Kalida, Ohio, ranks 27th in NCAA DII and finished her two-year career as the top hitting player in AASU history with a career .356 hitting percentage.

For Flagler, Beale leads the team with 506 kills and her 488 digs are just seven shy of setting a school single-season record. She leads the team with 21 double-doubles. She earned Southeast Region All-Tournament honors this past weekend at Wingate and was an All-Peach Belt Conference first team selection. Beale also earned PBC Player of the Week honors earlier in the season.

Burkhardt, a senior outside hitter, has 423 kills, 450 digs and a team-leading 61 service aces. She also earned Southeast Region All-Tournament and All-Peach Belt honors as well as being selected to the preseason All-PBC Team.

Weathersby, a junior middle blocker, has 484 kills, 328 digs, 84 total blocks, 56 aces and leads the team with a .240 attack percentage. She earned Southeast Region All-Tournament and All-Peach Belt honors like Beale and Burkhardt. Weathersby is a three-time Conference Player of the Week selection.

Jessica Howard, who led the Jaguars to the second-winningest season in school history (22-12), became the first ASU player to earn Peach Belt Conference Player-of-the-Year honors on Nov. 15. She led the PBC in kills with 524 (4.09 kpg.) and in blocks with 139 (1.09 bpg.) and ranked third in hitting percentage (.318).

A two-time PBC Player-of-the-Week selection in 2009, Howard registered a season-high and career-high 26 kills at USC Aiken on Oct. 1. She posted double-digit kills in 29 matches, including the last 17 in a row, and eclipsed the 20-kill mark eight times, including five times in conference play. In her career, she amassed 1,803 career kills and 548 career blocks. Both figures rank third all-time in PBC annals.

All selections to the AVCA team are eligible for All-America consideration. As selected by the volleyball coaches, the AVCA All-America team will be released in conjunction with the NCAA National Championships, which begin this weekend and feature Flagler, who won the Southeast Regional. Likewise, first-team Daktronics selections are up for the All-America team, also released later this week and selected by Sports Information Directors.
