No. 1 Pirates Claim PBC Men's Tennis Regular-Season Title
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University men's tennis team captured the 2012 Peach Belt Conference regular season title with a 9-0 victory over No. 27 Flagler on Saturday afternoon in St. Augustine, Fla.
The crown is the seventh for the Pirates in the last eight seasons as Armstrong remained unbeaten on the season at 19-0 overall and 9-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 5-12 overall and 2-6 in the league.
Armstrong swept all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. The top-ranked duo of Mikk Irdoja and Georgi Rumenov beat the duo of Gino Ramirez and Uriel Oquendo, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles. The No. 16-ranked duo of Sven Lalic and Pedro Scocuglia knocked off the duo of Peter Coulis and Adam Hunt, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles, while the duo of Eudaldo Bonet and Matus Mydla blanked Inigo Landaluce and Stephan Stolz, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles.
Armstrong then notched straight set wins in all six singles matches to close out the victory. Top-ranked Rumenov shut out No. 48 Coulis, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, while No. 3-ranked Bonet beat Ramirez, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. No. 5-ranked Irdoja bested Landaluce, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles and No. 10-ranked Mydla knocked off Hunt, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
No. 35-ranked Scocuglia beat Stolz, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 singles while Daniel Regan beat Oquendo, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
Armstrong returns to action on Thursday, April 12, traveling to the No. 2-ranked team in NAIA, Embry-Riddle, for a 2:00 p.m. match in Daytona Beach, Fla.
