Peach Belt Releases Men’s Tennis Tournament Bracket

Tournament Bracket

AUGUSTA, GA – The Peach Belt Conference released the 2011 men’s tennis tournament bracket from the league office in Augusta.  The tournament will begin on Friday, April 15, at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta, Ga., and hosted by Augusta State University.  The top eight teams in the PBC standings advanced to tournament play with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA regionals.

Armstrong Atlantic State captured their sixth PBC regular-season title in the last seven years and will be the #1 seed as they attempt to win their seventh straight PBC title.  The 2008 and 2009 national champions are a perfect 21-0 on the season, the second time they have finished a regular season unblemished.  AASU has beaten the #1, #3, #4, #5, #6 and #8-ranked teams in the nation so far this season and have not lost to a Peach Belt Conference team since 2003.

AASU will face eighth-seeded USC Aiken in the first round of the tournament on Friday.  The Pacers defeated Georgia Southwestern in a marathon 5-4 match on Monday to earn the final tournament spot.  Ranked #30 in the nation, USCA snapped a five-match slide with their win in Americus.

The next three teams in the seeding were all tied, but Lander comes out on top with the #2 seed for the tournament.  Lander, Columbus State and Flagler all finished the regular season with a 7-2 conference record.  Each had one win and one loss against the other two teams and all had fallen to AASU but defeated everyone else on the schedule.  The tie was broken using the latest ITA regional rankings, which put Lander at #2, Flagler at #3 and Columbus State #4.

Lander meets seventh-seeded host Augusta State in the first round of the tournament while Flagler takes on #6 Georgia College and Columbus State meets #5 Francis Marion.

Quarterfinal matches will take place on Friday starting with the AASU/USCA match at noon.  The three other men’s matches will begin at 5:00 pm.  The semifinals will be on Saturday at 5:00 pm with the championship match set for Sunday at 1:00 pm.  Admission to the Newman Tennis Center is free.
