2008 Men's Soccer Team Notes (Through Games of Nov. 4)

 
 Clayton State (9-5-3, 3-0-3) -- Clayton State concluded the 2008 season 9-5-3 overall and 3-0-3 in the Peach Belt Conference... The Lakers concluded the regular season with a tough 2-1 defeat at No. 21 Limestone... Clayton State earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Tournament... Freshman forward Leighton Fredericks is tied for the Peach Belt Conference lead in goals scored with 12 and is ranked second in points scored with 25... Freshman forward Matty Phillips is tied for the Peach Belt lead in assists with 10... Junior goalkeeper David Cristofoli leads the Peach Belt in goals-against average at 1.06... Clayton State plays host to USC Aiken on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the 2008 Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
  Francis Marion (11-4-3, 5-0-1) -- FMU beat Lander (3-1) in Florence for the first time since 1999 and in the process captured the PBC regular-season championship – the program’s first since 2002 and its third this decade. FMU extended its unbeaten streak to 12 matches, equaling the second longest string in team history behind a 17-match streak in 2000....Earlier this year, FMU posted a school-record scoreless streak of 509:12, that included a school-record string of five consecutive shutouts....Sophomore GK Clark Richeson, who earlier this season set a team record for scoreless minutes in goal at 481:05, has his GAA at 1.39 after the two wins....The FMU defense allowed only 25 shots-on-goal and four scores in its six PBC matches....Last week, sophomore F Juan Rivas scored two goals in the Lander win and had two assists in a road win at Catawba.... Junior MF Kyle Clinton has 19 career goals.....Rivas and sophomore MF Ivan Juric (21 points each) lead FMU in scoring....Five freshmen are playing major minutes for the Patriots....Back Willie Hunt, the team's lone senior, scored his 10th career goal in the Lander win....The Patriots were picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches’ poll.....FMU has outscored its opponents 29-14 after halftime.....Over the past five seasons, 22 of FMU’s last 47 losses have been by one goal.....The team’s three ties equals an FMU season record. FMU has played five overtime contests this year (2-0-3 record).
   Georgia Southwestern (3-14, 1-5) -- The Hurricanes dropped their lone match of the week , a 3-0 decision to North Georgia at home on Saturday. North Georgia broke a 0-0 tie in the 65th minute and went on to post two additional goals to secure the road victory in the regular season finale for both teams…NGCSU outshot GSW 17-5 and held a 7-2 corner kick advantage…GSW seniors Christian Dane and Jonathan Smith were honored at halftime…the Hurricanes play at Lander on Tuesday evening in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
  Lander (10-3-1, 4-1) -- Lander enters the Peach Belt Conference tournament as the third seed after falling to Francis Marion, 3-1, in the Bearcats’ regular-season finale last week. Lander will host Georgia Southwestern in the first round of the PBC tournament. Lander defeated the Hurricanes, 1-0, earlier this year at Lander. The loss to Francis Marion snapped a five-game winning streak against the Patriots. On the season, Lander has outscored its opponent, 37-16, with seven of those goals allowed coming in the last three games. The Bearcats, who have been ranked as high as No. 9 in the NSCAA national poll, have posted seven shutouts this season.
   UNC Pembroke (9-8-1, 2-4) -- UNCP ended its regular season campaign on a four-game winning streak with victories over both Chowan and USC Aiken last week, giving the braves a winning record in regular season action for the first time since 2005 … With the victory over the Pacers, fifth-seeded UNCP will travel to Dahlonega, Ga., on Tuesday to face fourth-seeded North Georgia in the PBC Tournament quarterfinals … The winner gets the reward of facing top-seeded and 2008 PBC Regular Season Champion Francis Marion in the PBC Semifinals in Augusta, Ga., on Friday evening.
 
 North Georgia (7-10-1, 2-3-1) -- The Saints found themselves needing to win their regular season finale to host a first-round Peach Belt Conference Tournament game, and they hit the road and took care of business, blanking Georgia Southwestern 3-0 at Hurricane Field. A pair of seniors scored the first two goals of the game as Jose Herrera and Avram Allen put the Saints up 2-0. Freshman Terry Gibbs had a day of his own, assisting in the first two goals and tallying a goal late, giving North Georgia a 3-0 victory and sending the Saints home for a home playoff game for the first time in program history. The Saints will now play host to UNC Pembroke in the first-round of the PBC Tournament, a team North Georgia handled 2-1 on the road earlier this year.

USC Aiken (5-10, 1-5) -- The Pacers split their final two games of the regular season beginning with a 3-1 win over Coker followed by a 2-1 loss to UNC Pembroke. Against Coker, Troy Watson, Durrell Johnson and Kofi Akyere each had goals for the Pacers as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. In the regular season finale against UNCP, Akyere struck again with a goal in the 10th minute that tied the game at one each. UNCP went ahead in the 32nd minute and from then on it was all about the defense as neither team scored again. USCA is the seventh seed for the PBC Tournament and will put their season on the line on Tuesday when they travel to Clayton State.
