2007 Men's Soccer Team Notes (Through Games of Oct. 28)
| Clayton State (12-3-1, 4-1-1) -- The
Clayton State Lakers wrapped up their third straight Peach Belt
Conference regular season championship and the fourth in program
history last week with a victory and a tie. The Lakers knocked off
visiting Limestone 2-1 in an overtime thriller as freshman
sensation Jamal Geathers drilled home the game-winning penalty kick
in the 104th minute. That was followed by a tough 1-1 tie against
scrappy Francis Marion on Saturday. It appeared that the visiting
Patriots were heading for the upset until Clayton State senior
forward Tonny Madegwa scored the game-tying goal in the 85th minute
off an assist by B.J. Livingston… With the PBC regular
season championship, Clayton State gets a first round bye in the
Peach Belt Conference Tournament and will play host to the PBC
semifinals and championship on Friday and Sunday at Laker
Field… Clayton State advanced three spots to 13th in the
nation in the latest NSCAA/Adidas Division II Top 25 poll…
Geathers leads the Peach Belt Conference in both goals scored (16)
and points scored (35), while Madegwa is a close second in both
with 11 goals and 32 points… Madegwa leads the Peach Belt in
assists with 10… Madegwa is ranked sixth in the nation in
assists, while Geathers is ranked ninth in goals scored and 14th in
points scored… As a team, Clayton State is ranked seventh in
the nation in scoring offense… Shots against the vaunted
Laker defense have been at a premium this season, as the Lakers are
allowing only eight shots a game to lead the Peach Belt
Conference… Clayton State is also ranked second in
goals-against average at 0.94… The Peach Belt semifinals are
set for 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, and Clayton State will play
the winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal game between North
Georgia and USC-Aiken.

| Francis Marion (5-11-1, 1-4-1) -- The Patriots
beat Catawba 2-1 at home and tied #13 Clayton State 1-1 on the road
last week to conclude their regular season……Seven of
the team’s 11 losses have been by one goal…..Sophomore
MF Kyle Clinton scored twice last week, including the match-winner
vs Catawba and the lone score vs Clayton State….Freshman F
Juan Rivas leads FMU with 23 points (9 g, 5 a), and 17 of his 24
shots have been on goal, but he has missed the past three matches
with an injury….Freshman MF Ivan Juric owns season-totals of
8 goals and 1 assist…..Freshman back Justin Kibler scored
his first career goal vs Catawba on a header…..Senior
Jonathan Bartomioli has 18 career goals….Freshman GK Clark
Richeson has started each of the past five matches, after suffering
an injury in the preseason and missing the first 12 matches. He had
an 0.90 GAA last week (despite facing 42 shots), won his first
match, and earned a 1-1 tie at #13 Clayton State. He has allowed
only 3 goals in his last 290 minutes…..Six freshmen have
started for the Patriots so far this season….Against GSW on
Sept. 15, Willie Hunt recorded his first career hat trick, the
first for a Patriot in four seasons, and the 23rd in team
history….Over the past four seasons, 21 of FMU’s last
43 losses have been by one goal…..FMU plays at UNCP in the
first round of the PBC Tournament on Oct. 30. FMU lost to UNCP 3-2
during the regular season, but is 21-15-4 all-time against the
Braves, and has advanced past UNCP four times in five all-time PBC
Tournament meetings.
|
| Georgia Southwestern (0-17, 0-6) -- The
regular season came to a close for the Hurricanes with one of their
best efforts as they fell 1-0 to North Georgia on Saturday. The
one-goal margin was the closest GSW has come to getting an elusive
victory so far this season, thanks in large part to the efforts of
keeper Josh Scharnikow, who made six saves as the Saints outshot
GSW 20-4 in the game. Scharnikow is currently second in the PBC in
saves. GSW will be the #7 seed and travel to Lander for the first
round of the PBC Tournament in Greenwood.
|
| Lander (11-3-2, 4-2) -- The No. 22-ranked
Lander Bearcats on its only game last week when it defeated North
Greenville University, 5-0, in a non-conference contest. Adam
Arthur scored two goals and had one assist to lead the Bearcat
attack. Nick Cooke, Drew Courtney and Ivan Stoykov scored the
Bearcats’ other goals. Goalkeepers Garrett Daum and Clarke
McCarthy split the shutout as each played on half. The win was the
Bearcats’ 10th shutout of the season. Daum leads the PBC with
nine shutouts.
|
| UNC Pembroke (7-10, 4-2) -- After
beginning the 2007 campaign with a 1-8 record, the Braves are 6-2
in the month of October, including a current five-game winning
streak heading into the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. UNCP
recorded its sixth and seventh wins of the season with a 4-0 win at
Chowan in a weather-shortened game on Wednesday and then clinched
the No. 3 seed in the league tourney with a 3-1 victory over
visiting USC Aiken on Saturday that denied the Pacers the PBC
regular season title. UNCP is 5-11-3 all-time in the league
tournament, but are 3-1-2 in postseason play since 2002. The Braves
are just 13-18-3 all-time against their first round opponent,
Francis Marion, but will ride a six-game series unbeaten streak
into Tuesday evening’s match-up in Pembroke.
|
| North Georgia (7-9-1, 3-3) -- North
Georgia got back to .500 in the conference with a 1-0 victory over
Georgia Southwestern Saturday Evening. Jorrell Elie scored the only
goal of the game in the eighth minute to give the Saints the
victory and get them to 3-3 in the conference. The Saints will
travel to Aiken, SC for a first round Peach Belt Conference matchup
with USC Aiken. This is the first season North Georgia has been
full NCAA members and been able to compete for championsips. The
Saints fell 2-1 in double overtime last month to the Pacers on the
road and will have a chance to avenge that early season defeat in
the PBC Tournament.
|
| USC Aiken (7-8-2, 4-2) -- USC
Aiken played just one game last week, falling at UNC Pembroke 3-1
on Saturday…With the loss, the Pacers missed an opportunity
at winning their first-ever Peach Belt title and fell into a
three-way tie for second…As he has done so often lately,
junior Kofi Akyere provided the offense for USCA, scoring early in
the second half to cut into the Braves’ 2-0
lead…Akyere has scored the Pacers’ last five goals and
eight of their last 10…He is currently second in the PBC in
goals (12) and third in points (27)…The Pacers head into the
PBC Tourney as the fourth seed and for the second-straight season
will host North Georgia in the first round…USCA defeated the
Saints 2-1 in double overtime last season in the tournament and in
the same fashion earlier this season.
