PBC Golf Update - Oct. 20

Three big golf tournaments on Monday and Tuesday saw all 10 PBC men's teams in action as the fall season comes to a close. Flagler's Chris Bray won the Southeast Preview while GCSU was sixth at Mizuno and Columbus State tied for third at the Indian Bayou Classic.

Will Wilson Southeast Preview

Flagler's Chris Bray won the 16-team tournament with 73-66-71 over three-day event for an even-par 210. The tournament was played at the 7,018-yard, par-70 Tanglewood Park Championship course in Clemmons, N.C., site of the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional. Bray is Flagler’s first medalist since Jack Melnicoff shared the honor at Northwood Invitational Mar. 2, 2004. Bray shot a 3-over 73 on the first day and followed that with a 4-under 66. He shot a 1-over 71 to jump over two golfers for the top spot. Bray held off three golfers by one stroke.

Two of the three golfers Bray escaped were from PBC schools. Lander's Charlie Boyle shot 72-66-73 to finish tied for second alongside USC Aiken's Frederik Schulte who shot 71-72-68. Barton's Thomas Muto, Jr., was also tied for second.

USC Aiken finished second in the team scoring, two strokes behind champions Barton. The Pacers moved up six places over the final two days. USC Aiken finished the first round in eighth place. The Pacers surged up the leaderboard to a tie for fourth in the second round before moving up two more spots on the final day. The second place finish was the best team finish of the fall for the Pacers. In total, four Pacers ended the preview in the top 26. Kevin Grady (Woodbine, Md./Century) tallied a three-round score of 224 (78-74-72) to finish in a tie for 22nd. Justin Thompson (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) and Mark Dickson (Edinburgh, Scotland/Firrhill) both carded three-day totals of 225 to finish tied for 26th individually.

Lander finished tied for third in team standings, just five strokes out of the lead after a final-round 294. Flagler was fifth with UNC Pembroke 8th and North Georgia 15th.

Southeast Preview Results

Mizuno Intercollegiate

Hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University, the Mizuno Intercollegiate sported 13 Division I teams playing alongside both AASU and GCSU. Contested at the 7,016-yard, par-72 Savannah Quarters Country Club, the GCSU Bobcats finished sixth overall, while AASU was 12th.

GCSU, ranked #2 in the nation, was led by junior Joe Young who finished fourth overall with 212 (-4) firing a plus-two 74 in the final round. The All-American is averaging 71.1 strokes a round this season, adding two top-five finishes and four top-10 finishes in five matches this year.

Armstrong Atlantic State was led by Matthew Motes, who finished tied for 17th with rounds of 72-71-75=218 (+2). Jacob Tilton was three strokes behind in a tie for 25th. East Carolina won the event with a 12-under 852.

Mizuno Results

Indian Bayou Classic

Columbus State was tied for third and Clayton State tied for fifth at the Indian Bayou Classic hosted by North Alabama. The Cougars fired rounds of 297 and 298 on the tough par-72, 7079-yard Indian Bayou Golf Course in Destin, Fla., to finish 23 strokes back of North Alabama, the #1 team in the nation.

Clayton State was five strokes behind the Cougars wiht a two-round total of 600, tied for fifth with Northeastern State. Montevallo also competed in the event, finishing tied for 13th at 622.

Columbus State's Stephen Swanepoel fired a final round 1-over 73 to finish in second place, one stroke ahead of Shorter's Arvid Bengtsson. Jeremy Britt rebounded from Monday's 79 and was the low Cougar on Tuesday with an even-par 72. Columbus High product Michael Lee finished at 153 with his final round 75. Michael Hicks finished the tournament at 152 with his closing round 78. Sophomore Steven Paine closed with a 78 and finished the two-day event at 157.

Clayton State was led by Neil Thomas who finished at even-par 144 after rounds of 70 and 74. Thomas was tied for fifth overall, six strokes ahead of teammate Wade Binfield who tied for 21st with a 150. Montevallo's Aaron Ebert was the low Falcon finisher, coming in tied for 28th after rounds of 77 and 75.
