GOLDSBORO, N.C. – Incoming UNCP freshman Jordan Walor shot
rounds of 68 and 69 at the par-72, 7,021 yard Walnut Creek Country
Club to qualify for the 2008 U.S. Amateur Championship to be held
on August 18-24 at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.
Walor, a native of Wake Forest, was the third and final player to
be eligible out of a field of 84 golfers that participated in the
qualifying event at Walnut Creek.
“I’m delighted that Jordan will be representing UNC
Pembroke on the national level at the U.S. Amateur,” said
UNCP head coach David Synan. “Having an incoming freshman
compete at the very top of amateur golf is very exciting for
myself, the golf program and the Braves’
community.”
The championship will take place at Pinehurst’s course No. 2
(par 71) and course No. 4 (par 70). The tournament will consist of
a 36-hole stroke play on Monday and Tuesday and will be cut down to
64 players to compete in match play after Tuesday’s round.
The match play will continue until Sunday when there will be a
36-hole final between the surviving participants.
The Amateur Open is the oldest golf tournament in the United
States. It was created in 1895 by the USGA and is one day older
than the U.S. Open.
Currently ranked eighth in the state for the class of 2008 and 18th
overall by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association, Walor was named the
2008 Cap 7 Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year averaging
34.6 strokes per nine holes. In 2007 he won the North Carolina 3
Tour Challenge shooting a 69-73 at Foxfire Village West.
It was also in 2007 that Walor finished in fifth place at the N.C.
Dogwood State Championship with rounds of 72, 73 and 71. Walor won
the 2007 Wake County Amateur carding rounds of 68-68 to capture the
title while finishing in a tie for fourth place a the Trusted
Choice Big I State Tournament with rounds of 73 and 69.
Walor becomes the second PBC golfer to qualify for the U.S. Amateur, joining Clayton State's Will Wilcox.
