ASU's Ben Madgen Breaks PBC All-Time Scoring Mark

With a putback basket at the 9:29 mark of the second half, Augusta State’s Ben Madgen broke one of the most esteemed and long-held records in the Peach Belt Conference as he became the league’s all-time leading scorer. The senior guard for the Jaguars scored 17 in Augusta State’s 85-62 win over North Georgia, giving him 1,866 career points.

Madgen began the 2009-10 season fifth on the PBC list with 1,670 points. From Williamstown, Australia, he led the PBC in scoring last year with 18.8 points per game, scoring 658 in total, the ninth-highest single-season mark in PBC history. In 2009-10, he once again leads the league in scoring with 17.8 ppg, including the record-breaking 17 on Monday night.

Named a Daktronics All-American in 2008-09, Madgen began his career as the PBC Freshman of the Year in 2006-07, helping the Jaguars to a PBC co-Championship and the top seed in the southeast region as they hosted the NCAA Regional for the first time. Madgen was named All-Conference that season and the following two years and could become only the second PBC player in history to be named All-Conference four times, joining USC Aiken’s Derek Moore who was honored each season from 1995-99.

Madgen was a key part of the 2007-08 team that again hosted the NCAA Regional and made the first of two straight trips to the NCAA Elite Eight, reaching the national championship game that season. ASU is the only PBC school to ever make back-to-back trips to the Elite Eight as they won the regional again in 2009. That year the Jaguars also won the PBC Tournament for the first time since 2002 with Madgen named the Tournament MVP.

The PBC record of 1,863 had been set by Francis Marion’s Carlton Farr, who played for the Patriots from 1990-95, the first years of existence for the Peach Belt Conference. Although he never led the league in scoring, Farr was named the PBC Player of the Year in 1994-95 and All-Conference three times, twice on the first team.
