Baseball Player of the Week: Ty Barkell, USC Aiken
Barkell hit .588 with an .824 slugging percentage as the Pacers went 3-1 last week. The junior collected hits in all four games with multiple hits in three of the four. He hit .692 in a three-game series against Montevallo, going 4-for-5 in the opener with a pair of RBIs. He went 2-for-4 in game two with another driven in and 3-for-4 in the finale with a home run. He scored four runs, was 2-for-2 in stolen bases and struck out only once in 17 at-bats. In the field, he was perfect in 30 chances at first base with two assists. Barkell is currently fifth in the PBC in slugging percentage, sixth in home runs and eighth in RBIs.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Jordan DeLoatch, UNC Pembroke
DeLoatch struck out a career-best 10 batters and allowed just two hits and no walks in a complete game shutout of Pfeiffer on Wednesday. The junior lefty allowed a single in both the fourth and fifth innings, but very little else. The Falcons hit just .069 against him in the outing as he threw 117 pitches and retired the sides in order in six different innings. He retired 10 straight Falcons before allowing a single in the fourth, and closed out the midweek tilt by sitting down the last 14 batters he faced. DeLoatch is seventh in the PBC in wins and 11th in the league in ERA and strikeouts per game.
Baseball Freshman of the Week: Brandon Benson, Georgia College
Benson hit .429 in four games for the Bobcats last week with five RBIs and five runs scored. The freshman second baseman went 5-for-7 in a doubleheader against Clark Atlanta, collecting three triples in the two games with a pair of RBIs. He drove in another in the opener against Carson-Nemwan, then went 1-for-3 with two more RBIs in the nightcap. Benson slugged .857 with a .529 on-base percentage on the week and was perfect in 24 chances at second base. He is currently second in the PBC in triples.
