AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State head baseball coach Skip Fite
announced Thursday the addition of 13 high school and junior
college standouts who will join the Jaguar baseball program
beginning in the fall of 2007.
Of the Jaguars' 13 signees, eight are pitchers and five are
position players.
Headlining the recruiting class is Scott Shaw, a 6-1, 180-pound
right-handed pitcher from Grayson, Ga. A second team NJCAA
All-American for Gordon (Ga.) Junior College, Shaw posted an 11-0
record and 1.71 ERA and was named the Georgia Junior College
Pitcher Of The Year.
Brandon Iverson, a 6-3, 190-pound righthander from Everett, Wash.,
was a conference starter for Everett (Wash.) Junior College. He had
a 4-0 record and four saves with a 1.16 ERA. As a freshman, he
sported a 5-2 record and a 2.24 ERA.
Chris Tyler, a 5-10, 175-pound lefthander from Warner Robins, Ga.,
was a teammate of Shaw at Gordon Junior College. He booked a 5-4
record and 4.04 ERA in 71 innings, with 79 strikeouts and 24
walks.
Adam Mathis, a 6-3, 190-pound lefthander from Blairsville, Ga., was
a two-year starter for Truett-McConnell (Ga.) College. He had a 5-4
record with a 2.96 ERA and had 62 strikeouts in 79 innings
pitched.
Patrick Lowe, a 6-3, 187-pound righty from Port Charlotte, Fla.,
recorded a 6-2 mark with a 3.12 ERA. He was the top starter for
Lemon Bay High School for each of the last two years. Lowe was a
high school teammate of early signees Alex Walker and Robby
Downing.
Jacob Watson, a 6-3, 181-pound righty from Acworth, Ga., managed a
4-5 record with a 4.25 ERA for Andrew (Ga.) College in Cuthbert,
Ga. A side-arm specialist, he walked just nine batters as a
sophomore and just 14 batters in 97 innings of work during his
junior-college career.
Steven Voigt, a 6-3, 175-pound righthanded pitcher/shortstop from
Waverly, Ga., turned in a 6-0 record and 1.31 ERA and also batted
.336 for Camden County High School. He helped lead the Wildcats to
the Class AAAAA state semifinals where they lost to eventual state
champion Walton High. He went 3-0 in the state playoffs and only
allowed two runs in 24 innings of work.
Chris Greer, a 6-3, 187-pound local product from nearby Thomson,
Ga., posted a 9-3 record with a 2.48 ERA for Westminster and was
named team MVP.
Bryson Smith, a 6-2, 195-pound third baseman/shortstop from
Watkinsville, Ga., hit .526 with seven homers and 11 doubles for
North Oconee High School. He stole 26 bases and helped lead the
Titans to the second round of the Class A state playoffs and was
selected the team's MVP.
Logan Dempsey, a 6-2, 220-pound first baseman/designated hitter
from LaGrange, Ga., hit .358 for Gordon Junior College. A teammate
of fellow signees Scott Shaw and Chris Tyler, he led Gordon with
eight homers and 53 RBI and added 12 doubles. He helped lead Gordon
to a school-record 43 wins and a second-place finish in the state
junior college tournament.
Carl Burrow, a 6-1, 195-pound outfielder and local product from
Martinez, hit .298 with five homers, 11 doubles and 15 stolen bases
for Middle Georgia College. He prepped at nearby Lakeside High
School.
Justin Roberts, a 5-10, 167-pound second baseman from Watkinsville,
Ga., hit .478 with 10 doubles and 18 stolen bases for North Oconee
High School. He was a high school teammate of Bryson Smith.
Rounding out the recruiting class is Steven Quick, a 5-11,
210-pound third baseman/shortstop from Waynesboro, Ga. He batted
.343 with four homers and 25 RBI for Burke County High School while
splitting time in the infield between shortstop and third base.
"I feel really good about this recruiting class," Fite said. "We
have addressed some depth concerns we had with our pitching staff
and we should be able to have a quality arm starting every game on
the mound. We've added power and speed to our offense and also
added some quality depth to all positions. We will have some young
players starting next year, but we will be very athletic."
These 13 student-athletes will join the four early signees from the
fall signing period -- Alex Walker (Englewood, Fla.), Blake
Pockrandt (Lilburn, Ga.), Scott Strickland (Richmond Hill, Ga.) and
Robby Downing (Englewood, Fla.).

number one. He's a power pitcher with great location and a

delivery with a lot of movement and great control. He will add very

second baseman with great hands and a very good arm. He has above
average speed and we're looking for him to be our second baseman
