Augusta State Named Volleyball Team Sportsmanship Award Recipient
AUGUSTA, GA – The Augsuta State University volleyball team
was named the PBC Team Sportsmanship Award winner on Friday by the
conference office. The awards program, which includes honoring one
team from each of the league’s 12 championship sports, will
also recognize one institution with the ‘Institution of the
Year Sportsmanship Award.’ This is the first year of the
awards program.
The program presents an award following each championship season to
the team in that sport that best exemplifies the spirit of
sportsmanship and generally conducts themselves with a high degree
of integrity, character and class. The team award is selected by
other teams who compete in that sport. Points are awarded based on
how each team finished in the voting and in June, the institution
with the highest totals will receive the ‘PBC Institution of
the Year Sportsmanship Award.’
The 2008 ASU volleyball team was one of the toughest on the court.
Although it is not reflected in their 14-21 overall record, the
Lady Jaguars played in a league-high eight five-set matches,
including a dramatic 3-2 match against rival USC Aiken in the first
round of the PBC volleyball tournament. Under coach Amber Cornett,
ASU was second in the PBC in both blocks and service aces. Junior
Jessica Howard led the PBC in kills and blocks.
The Augusta State women's cross country team also won the Team
Sportsmanship award ealier this fall. Other fall winners were
Francis Marion in men's cross country and men's soccer and Columbus
State in women's soccer.
